Chris Eugene Kiar, 89, was born October 19, 1933 in Spencer, Iowa the son of Andrew and Petra Kjar. He passed on September 12,2023.
Raised in Rodman, Iowa, he was the son of farmers. Schooling was in Humboldt where he was a shy guy who excelled in sports especially football and basketball. To this day he still holds the record for most points in one game, and that was well before the 3 point line. That also got him the love of his life, Marlene. Not the greatest of students, he parlayed athletic ability into college scholarships to play football and basketball at Upper Iowa, home of the Peacocks.
After graduating with a degree in teaching, he went into the military during peace time years. He began his teaching career after the army and eventually ended up in Estherville. After years of teaching history in junior high, he went and got his PHD and became vice and then head principle at Estherville High. He always enjoyed his students and would spend every noon hour mingling with every and all students. While at Estherville High he used the wood shop on off hours and became an accomplished wood worker, and upon retirement he became a carpenter for Leroy Joachims. We teased him all the time about being part of the oldest construction company in the state. Winters were enjoyed in Florida with Mom and many dear friends, an occasional cruise and afternoon happy hour. As always he loved his Iowa Hawkeyes and New York Yankees. He always had his Hawkeye shirt or coat on and football Saturday was his favorite. ln short he loved Iowa and Iowa loved him.
He is survived by his three children, Michael, Scott, Elizabeth, also numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Petra, son Chris Junior, wife Marlene and siblings Anna, Axel, Karen, George and his twin sister Christa.
A private family burial took place.
Condolences may be sent to the family.
